Reading Group reflection

Reading groups may not seem to be the most fun time of the day, but thats when your wrong. We are reading Where the Lilies Bloom, and so far I am enjoying it. The book is very active and has lots of funny humor page after page. My reading group has Ms. Whitt, Ajani, Jacob and Teresa. Four people I know pretty well. The book is almost finished and we only have a couple more chapters to go.

Genesis Shelter

Josh Miller
11/30/12

Last week our trip was to the Genesis Shelter. First we went to the GA Justice Project and we were taught how to trust people and how many people they see every day come in because of crime charges, fired from their job, or anything that effects their life and living. I found it interesting at how many homeless families come each year with new born babies. We were toured around and shown where they keep parents' babies. We saw different rooms for the actual parents and where they socialize and eat. I found the diaper room very interesting because there were over 6,000 in just one little utility closet! The shelter for babies had about four different sections for the maturity of each baby such as walking, speaking, or understanding instructions. Each room was much nicer than I expected and cleaner. It would seem a little more depressing because its a shelter for people in need, but it actually was joyful and nice, especially the newborns and babies. Every one seemed to enjoy the trip and become focused on the babies and the shelters for people.

Foxfire

Foxfire trip

Foxfire was the best field trip so far. I really enjoyed the culture of the Appalachian people. Foxfire is very important because the way the people live there have no technology, while some of us can't live without technology, and whatever they want, they have to build or hunt. I saw many tools and learned how to use a shaving horse. I enjoyed the blacksmith shed, one because it was warm and I got to see an S shaped hook be made right in front of me. I never knew that the fire used to melt metal could get up to about 15,000 degrees. The whip was very impressive and sounded like a pistol. It surprised everyone. I personally hate the city and love this way of life at Foxfire.

Trail of Tears

Josh Miller
11/2/12

In the year of 1838, the Cherokee were forced to walk many miles. Forced out of their homes, however they were dressed, even barefoot, they would be on the long journey which we call the Trail of Tears. Many of the soldiers disagreed on this, but had no choice and bared with it throughout the whole trail. The Cherokee walked from Georgia, to thousands of miles to the west where they would settle. It was a very tragic and brutal journey for many months. Thousands died, even babies and children, but once they got to the ending of the trail, the land was just as magnificent and natural as their land before.

No Choice

Bare foot, shirtless
Taken like money
Hopeless
No food or shelter
Many white settlers
 Raged with anger and disapproval
President Jacksons signature unfortunately made it official
One mile down, thousands to go
Death all around
How many dead?
Too many to count
Finally got to our destination point

Dahlonega trip

Josh Miller

Dahlonega trip

My class and I went to Dahlonega for our last trip. We saw many cool things such as a safe with over one million dollars worth of gold coins inside the Dahlonega Gold Museum. The Museum was very interesting and covered with gold. We also went inside the first largest mine in the whole world. There were lots of bats and old tools scattered around. It was dark and cold also. Our tour guide was awesome and showed us a high powered drill that miners used back then to drill through the hard rock. Its power was fifty times higher than the jack hammers used on the streets today. I learned about how to pan for gold and jiggle the pan around so you don’t lose any gold from your pan. I really liked doing that because I got one piece of gold. I learned how gold is made inside phones today and how heavy it can be. I never knew about the fire balls that came flying by miners inside the mine. Overall, I liked the trip and I really am more interested in gold now than I was before.

Josh Miller my trip to Cloudland Canyon

Cloudland Canyon Trip

Last Tuesday, my class and I went to Cloudland Canyon. I enjoyed seeing the water fall. It was very high up and the water was very cold. In class I learned about how high up the canyon was itself, I was amazed then at how high the canyon was when I actually got to see it. Each person in my class had to choose a partner and make a movie based on Cloudland Canyon. We had to add our vocabulary words in our movies. I really liked doing this because I got to do it with Jacob and Luke, and I got to wear my jig-saw mask.

Unstoppable

Many doubt
Many fail
But some succeed
Flying in freedom
Or imprisoned or trapped
  Trying to get out
But can’t
As you watch the others go far
While you stare
You watch and learn
Realizing you are capable
Until you realize you could be unstoppable

Arabia Mountain 10/12/12

Last Tuesday, transition went to Arabia Mountain. We were assigned different things to write about. We wrote poems, took lots of pictures, and we hiked all day. The last assignment we had to do was to measure different weathering pits. Overall, it was about four hours of hiking. I really enjoyed seeing the big rock pools near the middle of the mountain and wildlife that lives on the mountain.

Stone Mountain and Arabia Mountain are very similar, and they both are made of mostly granite. Stone Mountain is like the big brother to Arabia Mountain. Arabia Mountain has many more plants, streams and wildlife because of the size and steepness of the Mountain. Both Mountains are very close to each other and are near Atlanta.

Hunger Games Catching Fire
RAT option: 7

Katniss does not want to eat with every one one morning, so she sleeps in. Of course Effie did not like this one bit. Katniss sits with Peeta and Haymitch. They discuss their training and different techniques. Katniss feels that They don't need to learn each others fighting techniques. She feels that since they all are victors they all know one and another.

Oakland Poem/Pic

When we went to Oakland we had to take pictures of different letters that spelled a word to describe what we thought of Oakland Cemetery.  We put the letters together and made it into a word.  Then I had to make a poem involving that word.  Here is my picture and poem:

Oakland Cemetery

Many bodies
Many lives
Lots from war that died
Emotional stones
Lots of graves look as if they were cloned
 Birds flying around like angels
Staring down at coffins
Inside, bodies mangled
Death all around
If you are wondering alone, there is no sound
Old stories and tales all over
Frozen men and women
Big, strong mausoleums
So tall and beautiful
I could not wait to see them
Potters field directly ahead
Many dead bodies
Not even in a coffin or a bed
Spirits arising and watching us all
Very freaky
Oakland Cemetery’s history is very misty

Oakland Cemetery

Josh Miller
9/13/12

Toady I went to Oakland Cemetery with my class. I had a great time and I thought that this was very cool because I usually don’t have the opportunity to go to places like this. I learned many new facts and I never knew Bobby Jones was buried here. I expected from the pictures I saw at school for the cemetery to be small, but it turns out it has about seventy thousand people buried. That’s a lot of people  for 48 acres.
I got lots of pictures and I can not wait for when I go again to get very detailed pictures. I liked this field trip because you get to walk around a lot outside and I got to learn about history from the civil war and the 1800’s. I love learning about this kind of stuff and about old historic places and areas to. I liked Potters field the best because it freaks me out, yet drags my attention into what I really am

Weekly Reflection 9/7/12

Hello, my name is Josh Miller and this is my third week in transition. I have learned about Georgia’s rivers and multiplying with decimals. I also learned different angles and shots for photography with Mr. Smith. I think I did good this week, but I do think I got a little unorganized with my work. My goal for next week is to stay more organized with my homework folder and get my RATS done before bed.

weekly reflection

Josh Miller

My name is Josh. I am very active and I love the outdoors. I love to build things like machines, tree houses and thing that moves. I compete in level eight men’s gymnastics and I really love this sport. I also do parkour. I am good at many other sports too. I enjoy riding my bike on jumps and doing dare devilish types of stuff. I never like to be inside a lot even when it is raining, I am outside every day. I like to make people laugh. Transition so far has been very fun and much more work. I feel more organized this year and I have better strategies for getting my work done.
