Jimmy Carter

Josh Miller
2/15/13

We went from learning about FDR, to Jimmy Carter. Two men who helped a lot for our country. Jimmy Carter helped our country with the energy crisis. He himself even took down his yacht and told everyone to where sweaters every time they got cold. I never knew that. Jimmy Carter grew up as a country boy. Always doing good deeds for his father and doing extremely good with his education. When he got older, his uncle persuaded him and Jimmy went to the Navy at 18. He left early in 1953 due to his fathers cancer. From there on, he continued with his fathers job in peanut farming. He ran for Governor and then Senate, and then to whom we know now was our 39th President.

Longleaf Pine Poem

Pine

Burning and cracking
hangs off of a branch, feebly sagging
So gentle and innocent, as we cut you down
Leaving abundant forest dead with no sound
160ft up
Comes crashing down into muck
Animals leave their condos and homes
Probably to then live instead under a stone
Protect the Longleaf Pine
Or you will be fined

Little White House Trip

Josh Miller
2/4/13

10 Things I Learned About FDR at the Little White House
Last friday, my class visited Little White house where FDR was founded in the 1900's in his warm springs. He was the first to ever create a treatment center for polio. Because of FDR's legs, it was hard to get from place to place. He decided to create levers on his car. one for gears, one for the gas pedal, and of course one for the brake. No legs were involved. Did you know his car was made by personal my favorite car brand "Ford"? FDR was a very good man and accomplished many things. He was our president for 12 years and gov of NY once. He helped millions struggle through not just polio, but also The Great Depression. He created a program called The New Deal. I thought that the polio pools in Warm Springs were very cool. Well I wouldn't say cool, more like warm and cozy. The water was about 80 degrees! I never realized how soothing and warm the water was. I really enjoyed this trip because of the amazement of how much history was inside Little White House.

Franklin D Roosevelt

Franklin D Roosevelt was shaped by many things. His work, his wife Eleanor, and of course his experience with polio. Franklin developed polio at a very rare age before he was president. He was so upset at the amount of people who had polio, he spent his money on property to build a polio center. Franklins new polio center in  Warm Springs was a success and helped hundreds of people struggle through. Franklin D Roosevelt accomplished many things in his life. He was President of the United states for a couple of years, he  helped many who struggled with polio, and thousands loved him for his personality and witty sense of humor.

Needle Palm

Usually, I would be avoided
My name scares people off
But if you bother me, then I will assure you that you will get poked
I am like a sea-earchant
Always sitting around waiting to stab someone with one of my thorns
But you don't have to avoid me for ever
once I grow to be very tall and wide, it would be hard to even get near my thorns
You could even climb me
 I am found all over
From the Flint River and off the coast of the South East
To big places such as New York City
I can live in snow or heat over 100 degrees

Reading Group reflection

Reading groups may not seem to be the most fun time of the day, but thats when your wrong. We are reading Where the Lilies Bloom, and so far I am enjoying it. The book is very active and has lots of funny humor page after page. My reading group has Ms. Whitt, Ajani, Jacob and Teresa. Four people I know pretty well. The book is almost finished and we only have a couple more chapters to go.

Genesis Shelter

Josh Miller
11/30/12

Last week our trip was to the Genesis Shelter. First we went to the GA Justice Project and we were taught how to trust people and how many people they see every day come in because of crime charges, fired from their job, or anything that effects their life and living. I found it interesting at how many homeless families come each year with new born babies. We were toured around and shown where they keep parents' babies. We saw different rooms for the actual parents and where they socialize and eat. I found the diaper room very interesting because there were over 6,000 in just one little utility closet! The shelter for babies had about four different sections for the maturity of each baby such as walking, speaking, or understanding instructions. Each room was much nicer than I expected and cleaner. It would seem a little more depressing because its a shelter for people in need, but it actually was joyful and nice, especially the newborns and babies. Every one seemed to enjoy the trip and become focused on the babies and the shelters for people.
